I like the way you worked pepper into this! And your image is perfect; that devil moon stirring up the waters! Very nice!

Running straight into that freight train to wrestle with it combines both the fear and the confidence that one can pepper it.

The whole piece is excellent, but I especially like how you closed it — the last couple of lines.

We need such bravery to beat that fear… the image of a freight train is scary.

Fear often feels like a freight train, and I have experienced that facing it is better than staying stuck in it. Unexpected use of the word “pepper!”

Um, yeah – unexpected for me, too!

That’s a beautiful photo, Jilly, and I really like the way you’ve incorporated the word: ‘unpeppered’. I also love the fear/freight train metaphor and the lines:
‘wrestling it to the ground with
lustful wildness
until it is subdued
until it is your own’.

Confession: I wrote the poem last night and the word was originally ‘unwild’ – I like ‘unpeppered’ so much better!

Love the metaphor of wrestling with a freight train, the impossibility and the raw energy that brings to the poem.

Your insight is always welcomed. I’ve been reading a memoir/journal that has heavy themes of conquering fears and it came pouring out with this poem. Thanks for stopping by!

….an affair….once a person decides, my guess is that it’s very much like running head-on into an oncoming freight train!

Ah – but the ‘affair’ here is the lustful wrestling with one’s own fear, and the conquest of owing that fear, lest it own you. Thanks for stopping by, Lillian!

Thanks! The pic is of the full moon shining on our little lake out back. It seemed appropriate for a mad affair with our own fears. I acutally wrote the poem the night before and changed the word ‘unwild’ to ‘unpeppered.’ I liked it better that way.

Love the way things work out like that. As if the poem was just waiting to be ‘unpeppered.’
Amazing scenery right in your backyard.
