Human Error

All of our blunders
our scarlet miscalculations
drop like debris,
fuselage plummeting
when Quietus
buys the seat
beside us

Mid-air, my love,
we meet
at last

Immortal blue above
boundless patterns
of geo-green
and brown
beneath

And we are
cast in robes
of amaranthine
In the eternal in-between

The Finale for She & He and for the month of April.  On the 3rd day of National Poetry Month, a narrative began with the poem Quake. As many writers will tell you, it felt like the characters had taken me hostage and bid me write their story, so I spent this past month chained to my laptop in exchange for coffee and the by-line.  If you have not read the story of She & He, feel free to click on the above link to Quake and scroll through the poems.  To those who have been reading throughout the month – many thanks!  ~Jilly

Flying East / Flying West

Look for the finale of She & He tomorrow, April 30th!  Thank you to those who have followed the Narrative of these two characters through the month of April.  Their story has unfolded in a disjointed sequence as fiction often does.  I have shared it with you as it has been given to me by the voice of these two people.  Their voices come together today with He appearing on the left and She on the right.  Cheers! ~ Jilly 🙂

Still It Beat

She nearly bled out on the plane
cursing you
passion
upon passion

Severed the nerves
in white flames
denied the ghost
pain

Wiped her mouth
a thousand times

(still tasted of you)

Stood in the light
of this estranged city
hoping not to see
the night sky

Hugged the buildings
scurried in the shadows
shunning the sun

Razorbacking at the departing
planes
voice lost to the roar(s)

clawing at her chest
(no use)
still it beat

Fight or Flight

You played make believe
(pre)tending like
you love this calm

In real life you stopped
in the middle of
Halstead when
the crosswalk sign changed
to a flashing orange hand

Your blistered feet will insist
on clear music and guts

Splashing your warrior face
in honey wine
strong mead

You carry only
a boarding pass
2 artists’ brushes
one small, clean canvas

clutching a tissue paper flower
in your hand

Unreject

don’t let your complicated Self-talk
defeat your desire for flagellation

take your hands from your pockets
whip your unseasonable Sins to a blue glow
crash the pearly gates of Doesn’t Matter

you’ll never recover from
the textures of her laugh
or those thunder strokes of Simple

it’s not too hard to unreject

Cold Feet

The cold feet
of the masses
marching their
science of waiting
along the river
on that cold hot day
after you spiked
the obvious answers
across the net
that stood
between you
the point went to No One

Soon you will fall
into their cadence
where nobody knows
the way to the
District of Forget.

               March
                            March
                                         March

Sour Embrace

Unasked questions
spread across her face
seeping into and out of
the corners of her eyes

You caught each other
in the act of making
other plans

All that is left
is one long sour
embrace

Collect

she sat on the sidewalk
near your front door
gathering up the fallen
white petals of Impatiens
that grow there

sheltering them in her
hand, you lit them on fire

ignoring your tears
she slept beside you
with her shoes on

she didn’t burn

You Could

could you try to ignore
the things you know —

spend a lifetime
placing pennies
in the corners
of a round room
turn out the lights
pretend to forget
return each year
expecting them
to be face up

Day 22 at Glo/NaPoWriMo we are challenged to write a poem using a phrase of impossibility.

Dangerous Questions

Is it her scar that you love
or her?

Your therapist’s question
gnaws at you
like you gnaw at that knob
on the inside of your cheek
that you love and
so painfully cultivate

I hate it when he asks questions like that.
He’s usually right.

Why do you love her scar?

Because it keeps her from being
something perfect

Because if she is imperfect
then it makes my scars
less

Interrogate
Hesitate
Congratulate

Dangerous questions —
the gnaw
on the inside
of your being
that you
so painfully cultivate

Knowing the truth
of your answers
you rush west
when she
flees east,
you sally north
when she souths,
parlay when she folds

Lovest thou me?
Lovest thou my imperfection?
Lovest that it legalizes thine?
