From the bottomless abyss of a dream
the tiniest of sounds insinuates itself
into the slumber of my overworked soul
a shallow breath turns on its heels becoming
a sigh becoming a stroke of arms propelling
this sleeper to the surface of the water, yes
A yip a bark a three a.m. signal to rise, dress and leash the dog
No, it cannot be, I only dreamed it I tell my concrete limbs
I listen for more and am rocked, gently lulled back
into the water a simple swan dive
Ah! Refreshingly ice-tea plunge-like
I go, back-strokingly beautifully to sleep
until a silver spinning lure is cast and I nibble, I hear
A yip a bark a three a.m. signal to rise, dress and leash the dog
My face breaks the surface and I see the full moon
coming through the blinds calling me upward reaching for
T-shirt, jeans, slippers, I grapple with the Kleenex
box, several slippery books and a cast-off paperclip
on my nightstand, finding glasses if not senses that I must satiate
A yip a bark a three a.m. signal to rise, dress and leash the dog.
