He had no regrets and no last hoorah
Luncheon was served; hibiscus flow’r
The day the iguana went to the spa
No need to flee, nor did he cower
Seeing the good life stretch out before
Luncheon was served; hibiscus flow’r
Life in the wild was such a chore
A cultured iguana with an ear for the jazz
Seeing the good life stretch out before
No doubt about it, knows what he has
Lighting is perfect, the vibe is quite cool
A cultured iguana with an ear for the jazz
No resistance, he’s never the fool
His name up in lights, now he’s a star
Lighting is perfect, the vibe is quite cool
Placing an order for caviar
He has no regrets and no last hoorah
His very own limo, step up to the bar,
The day the iguana went to the spa

Join me at dVerse for Meeting the Bar where my challenge is to write a poem in one of the Repetitive Forms. We explore 5 potential forms: Villanelle, Terzanelle (like this one!), Pantoum, Triolet, and the Chant. Of course, you are also welcome to use any form that makes use of repetitive lines. Hope you will join in!
A classy iguana and an equally classy rhyme.

Thank you! This is a fun form, so I picked a silly topic for it 🙂 Hope you will be joining in!

I so enjoyed your terzanelle, Jill! I’ve never read a poem about an iguana before and they are such lovely creatures. Thank you for showing us how a terzanelle should be done.

Thanks, Kim! Iguanas thrive a bit south of here, but we are too far north for them in Orlando. One day I saw one swimming gracefully across a small lake in town and I knew he must be a lost pet. This was written for him, in hopes he would find a spa before summer ended.

When I lived in Germany, one of my friends worked at Cologne Zoo and he had an iguana. I don’t know if it was rescued from the zoo. That friend was also unlucky enough to slip on a wet patch and fall in the piranha pool! He had just fed them.

This is so fun… love the rhythm that adds to the playfulness… I cannot do anapests but for you they are just natural… Iguana and jazz what a great combo.

Thanks! It felt like a dance when I wrote it.

A fun foray into reptilian riffs and so very cool jazz; different from Le Jazz Hot, right? Thanks for hosting. I chose the Villanelle; I had a lot to say, so the form flowed out smoothly.

Thanks! I think cool jazz is the soundtrack here; iguanas move that way 😉

Don’t ask me why, but I thought about Rod Stewart when I read this. So much fun!

I do love a good riddle but you won’t let me ask you why, so I’m left to ponder…. Rod Stewart… hmmm. 🙂

Rod Stewart strikes me as a reptilian sort of guy who would enjoy a trip to the spa. Sorry my mind is a twisty biscuit.

video playing in my head: Rod Stewart, in a speedo, at the spa, singing, “If You Think I’m Sexy”. lol

Oh no! Now I’m scarred for life! That image!!! And it’s an iguana-skin speedo, to boot.

Hahaha! An Iguana with an ear for jazz (variations on the scale). This Terzanelle form looks like it would be just this far past my poetic reach. You make it look easy. And the lizard at the spa is a great, indelible image. (A backstory to this one?)

A backstory, indeed! An iguana just a bit north of his comfort zone seen swimming across a like a couple of years back. In my imagination he found refuge in some glam spot before winter came on and froze him solid.

Oh, yeah… you don’t need an iguana falling out of a tree on someone. I hope animal control took him in and found the owner.

That’s a lucky iguana with no regrets.

Love iguanas – always happy to see these weird wonderful creatures celebrated. I’ve been a couple of place where they just wander around freely – always reminds me of the bar scene in Star Wars.

Iguanas are a bit like extra-terrestrials, aren’t they?
Hey Christine – your link doesn’t seem to work. Would you be willing the re-link your poem and I’ll delete the other one? Looking forward to reading what you’ve shared!

What fun. That’s one iguana with class. I imagined the iguana having a blast in Vegas. 😀

The iguana that inspired this poem was swimming across the lake in Celebration, Florida, a town that was imaged by Walt Disney. This flashy reptile seemed appropriate 🙂 Glad you stopped by!
