the seven-legged spider
pulls threads through
needles of daffo-lillies
and yuck-a-dills
awaits aphin-lets and buzz-a-winkles
carefully cleaning thirty-five
toes she thought should be
hers
counting the lost five
wondering if it is true
that she lacks a soul
won’t go to heaven after all

Oh, Jilly. You have somehow managed to be silly, and sweet, and poignant, all at once. I absolutely love this piece.

Oh poor spider… but I think with a soul she would have found it hard to eat her little (third) husband.

Oh, that slightly wistful ending caught me unawares. Lovely silly stuff.

You had me at /buzz-a-winkles/. Too much fun and good stuff out on the trail. I’m smiling so much it hurts.

I feel sorry for the spider, having to clean thirty-five toes she thought should be hers.

This would be a nice name for a flower: “yuck-a-dills”

I thought so – like daffodils that are laughing. 🙂

We have a motion-activated surveillance camera at our front door (called Ring) which alerts us with the slightest motion by a ring on our iPhones. Every night, without fail, a granddaddy long-legs spider walks up the bricks and triggers the camera. Maybe it’s the 7-legged spider. I’ll have to check tonight! I loved your quadrille. Great fun!

The existential questions you raise… paradise and eternity for arachnids… toes?!? As always, Jilly, your wordplay (lightly) masks the intelligent poeting going on. Standing ovation!

Spiders don’t have a souls? I don’t usually let them live long, so I guess that’s a double downer, lol. Thanks for the silly side of Jilly

Love the wit and diction in this one, Jilly! Yes, a seven-legged spider is its own special brand of yuck! 🙂
