The Impending Shore

That morning the sun forgot to rise

we walked the old familiar dirt driveway

to nowhere ending abruptly at the edge

of the eroding bluff

remembering the house as it slowly

inched toward the lake

casting shingles

shutters into the slip

slip

slip

of the waves

far

below

drops of mist, swarming as midges

caught in a shaft of light

frizzing your hair

making our t-shirts

cling desperately

to our bodies

groans of hunger called

out from the belly of a distant

whale

fog-horning

warning ships and fools

of the impending shore
